How to Choose Between Screen Printing and DTF Transfers for Your Logo
Production Guide • By Promo AD Technical Team
When ordering custom apparel for your corporate team, athletic club, or promotional event, one of the first decisions you face is choosing between traditional screen printing and modern Direct-to-Film (DTF) transfer printing. Both methods deliver exceptional quality, but each serves distinct order sizes, color complexities, and fabric requirements.
1. What is Screen Printing?
Screen printing is the time-tested industry benchmark. Mesh screens are created for each ink color in your design, through which plastisol or water-based inks are pushed directly into the fabric weave.
- Best For: Medium to large bulk orders (24, 50, 100 to 10,000+ pieces).
- Color Fidelity: Unbeatable opacity and exact Pantone Matching System (PMS) ink mixing.
- Cost Efficiency: The per-piece price drops drastically as order volume increases because screen setup costs are distributed across more garments.
2. What is Direct-to-Film (DTF) Printing?
DTF involves printing full-color digital artwork onto a specialized PET film using water-based pigment inks, coating the back with hot-melt adhesive powder, and heat-pressing the film directly onto garments.
- Best For: Complex, multi-color logos, photographic graphics, fine gradients, and small batch orders (under 24 pieces).
- Zero Color Limitations: No screen setups required per color; print millions of shades in a single pass.
- Fabric Versatility: Bonds seamlessly to 100% cotton, polyester, moisture-wicking blends, fleece, and nylon.
Quick Comparison: Screen Printing vs. DTF Transfers
| Factor |
Custom Screen Printing |
Direct-to-Film (DTF) |
| Ideal Order Volume |
Bulk (24 to 10,000+ pieces) |
Small to Medium (1 to 100 pieces) |
| Color Complexity |
1 to 10 distinct spot colors |
Unlimited full-color & photorealistic gradients |
| Setup Fees |
Screen preparation per color |
Zero screen setup fees |
| Pantone Matching |
Exact PMS custom ink mixing |
CMYK digital approximation |
| Hand Feel & Texture |
Ultra-soft or traditional plastisol |
Smooth, stretchable, lightweight vinyl feel |
| Wash Durability |
50+ washes (Lifetime of garment) |
40–50+ washes with proper care |
Our Recommendation:
If your order is over 24 shirts with 1 to 3 solid brand colors, choose Screen Printing for the lowest per-unit price. If your design features intricate multi-colored gradients, photographs, or you only need a smaller run, choose DTF Transfers.

Artwork Guidelines
Vector vs. Raster Artwork: Why High-Res Files Matter for Custom Apparel
Artwork Preparation • By Promo AD Graphic Art Dept
Have you ever submitted a logo taken from a website screenshot or social media profile, only to be told it is "too low-resolution to print"? The difference between clean, professional apparel printing and blurry, fuzzy graphics comes down to Vector vs. Raster artwork.
1. Raster Graphics (Pixels)
Raster images (.JPG, .PNG, .GIF, .PSD) are constructed from a fixed grid of colored pixels. When viewed at their native size on a smartphone screen, they may look fine. However, when scaled up to fit a 12-inch chest print or digitized for embroidery, individual pixels stretch, causing jagged, blurry, and pixelated edges.
- Minimum Requirement: If using raster files, they must be created at 300 DPI (Dots Per Inch) at 100% full print scale on a transparent background.
- Avoid: Low-res 72 DPI web screenshots, WhatsApp photos, or low-res social media downloads.
2. Vector Graphics (Mathematical Paths)
Vector graphics (.AI, .EPS, vector .PDF, .SVG) use mathematical equations—points, curves, and lines—rather than pixels. This means a vector logo can be scaled from a tiny business card size to a 50-foot billboard without losing an ounce of sharpness or clarity.
- Infinite Scalability: Vector artwork scales infinitely with razor-sharp lines and pristine curves.
- Clean Color Separations: Allows screen print technicians to separate spot colors onto individual film positives.
- Embroidery Digitizing: Vector paths allow embroidery software to plot needle stitch angles and travel paths accurately.
Important Artwork Checklist Before Submitting:
- Convert Fonts to Outlines/Curves: In Adobe Illustrator, select all text and press
Ctrl+Shift+O (or Cmd+Shift+O on Mac) to convert fonts to vector shapes so missing fonts don't revert.
- Specify Pantone (PMS) Colors: Include your official PMS Solid Coated codes so we can mix exact ink shades.
- Keep Line Weights Above 1pt: Extremely thin hairlines (under 1 point) may not burn reliably onto mesh screens.

Promotional Marketing • By Promo AD Brand Consultants
Trade shows and business expos represent significant marketing investments. The goal of promotional merchandise is not just handing out freebies; it is generating sustained brand recall that lasts months after the event ends. Based on two decades of corporate merchandise data, here are the top 10 promotional items with the highest retention rates and return on investment:
-

Laser-engraved or full-color printed insulated tumblers keep drinks cold for 24 hours. Because they replace disposable cups, recipients use them daily at their desks and in their cars.

The Complete Guide to Custom T-Shirts & Keepsake Gifts for Family Reunions, Birthdays & Group Events
Events & Celebrations • By Promo AD Production Team
Whether you are organizing a 50-person multi-generation family reunion in Central Jersey, a milestone 40th or 50th birthday party celebration, or an anniversary weekend trip, matching custom t-shirts and personalized commemorative gifts turn an event into a lifelong memory.
1. Collecting Sizes Across Multiple Generations
The biggest headache for reunion coordinators is sizing. Unlike corporate orders that are mostly adult sizes, family reunions span toddlers, youth, standard adults, and extended plus sizes (up to 4XL or 5XL).
- Choose Standard Unisex Fit: Garment styles like the Gildan Heavy Cotton (5000) or Bella+Canvas 3001 offer identical matching colors across toddler, youth, and adult size lines so everyone looks cohesive.
- Pad Your Order: Always order 3 to 5 extra shirts in popular sizes (Large and XL). Inevitably, a cousin joins last-minute or someone wants an extra keepsake for a family scrapbook.
2. Creative Design Ideas That Everyone Loves Wearing
Don't settle for a plain block of text. Great event t-shirt designs incorporate:
- Family Tree or Branch Themes: Print the family tree on the back with roots acknowledging the founding matriarch/patriarch.
- Color-Coding Family Branches: Use the same front artwork, but print on different shirt colors for each family branch (e.g., green for Branch A, navy for Branch B, gold for Branch C).
- Milestone Birthday Numbers & Humor: Vintage-distressed "Made in 1975 — Aged to Perfection" or customized family crest graphics that look like premium retail apparel.
3. Complementary Event Gifts & Party Favors
Take your celebration to the next level by pairing your custom t-shirts with coordinated commemorative items:
- Custom Canvas Tote Bags: Great for welcoming out-of-town guests at hotels with itinerary sheets, local snacks, and reunion schedules.
- Laser-Engraved Stainless Tumblers: Keeps cold drinks chilled during outdoor park picnics and serves as a durable daily reminder of the gathering for years.
- Embroidered Dad Hats & Visors: Perfect for sunny summer weekend barbecues and golf outings.
